American History 101

July 1st, 2014

United-States-with-American-FlagPeople all over the country are gearing up to celebrate that most patriotic of holidays, the Fourth of July. This glorious red-white-and-blue event usually means bonfires, barbecues, and trips to the nearest body of water. But, as is the case with many of our other patriotic holidays, we party-loving Americans tend to forget the real “reason for the season.” Why does Independence Day really exist? Let’s have a brief lesson on American history!

Independence Day in the United States, at its simplest, is a celebration of our nation’s independence from the United Kingdom. This major feat was accomplished in 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted. Technically, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2nd that year, but the date that is celebrated (July 4) is the one that is shown on the Declaration of Independence. John Adams had predicted at one time that July 2 would be a day of great celebration for the United States, but he was off by a few days.

St. Patrick’s Day Myths Debunked

March 12th, 2014

Here at GiftZip, if there are two things we love they are holidays and being green with eco-friendly e-gift cards. Luckily, there’s a holiday all about green- St. Patrick’s Day! Contrary to popular belief though, this day isn’t all about leprechauns and green beer. We scoured the Internet to debunk some of the most pervasive myths about one of our favorite days of the year.

Myth 1: St. Patrick was Irish.

Well, not quite. Patrick was actually born in England, Scotland, or Wales (opinions vary) and was actually kidnapped by Irish raiders and held captive in Ireland according to traditional narrative. Once he escaped to England and pursued a religious path, however, he served as a missionary in Ireland. Now, he is a patron saint of Ireland, allowing the Irish a special claim to this special day. » Read more: St. Patrick’s Day Myths Debunked

The History of Father’s Day

June 5th, 2013

vintage dadWould you believe that the idea of Father’s Day was introduced by a woman? It’s true! Spurred on by the success of Mother’s Day, many people felt it was only fair to create similar holidays for other family members of influence, and Father’s Day seemed most likely to catch on. While other people in the U.S. promoted the idea of Father’s Day before it was well-established, a female named Sonora Dodd is credited for the holiday as we know it today due to her enthusiasm and persistence in making it a nationwide celebration.

Sonora Smart Dodd celebrated the first Father’s Day at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910 in honor of her father and Civil War veteran, William Smart. Smart was a quiet man who was left a widower when his wife died in labor giving birth to their sixth child. Smart went on to raise his six children alone on their small farm in Washington. Grateful for all the hard work and care he showed to her and her siblings, Sonora wanted to pay tribute to her father and others like him with a special day. After hearing about Mother’s Day a year earlier, she recommended a similar holiday celebrating fathers to her pastor. She initially suggested June 5th, her dad’s birthday, but the church did not have adequate time to plan their sermons. Consequently, the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.
