Fresh Ideas for Father’s Day Gifts

June 2nd, 2014

Father’s Day is quickly approaching, so it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to buy for the best guy in your life. Until now, Father’s Day has been the day where kids everywhere say, “I love you enough to get you a gift, but I didn’t have time to think of a more original present.” Just like Mother’s Day, this warm-weather holiday is in need of a gift-giving makeover. Instead of turning to the tried-and-true gift solutions like barbecues and neckties, let’s try to think outside the box this year! Check out these fresh present ideas, so you can show Dad how much you care by getting him something great.

Get Outdoors

Does Dad love to spend time outside? Is he interested in trying something new, or maybe needs some updated gear for a favorite activity? Whether it’s camping, fishing, hiking, backpacking, or birdwatching, GiftZip has you covered. Get him a gift he can really put to good use in the Great Outdoors, like a new fishing pole, tent, backpack, camping stove, or hiking boots. GiftZip.com carries e-gift cards from retailers like Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Eastern Mountain Sports, REI, Orvis, and The North Face, for all of your outdoor adventure needs. Who knows — maybe your present will inspire Dad to take you along on his next trip!

Pure Relaxation

Men are notorious for not taking care of their hair and skin the way they should — you probably know a guy who washes his hair with bar soap and doesn’t know that you’re supposed to wear sunscreen every day.  Fortunately, most major retailers carry men’s skincare and hair care products that are sure to change the way Dad thinks about his grooming routine! Bloomingdale’s, L’Occitane, and LUSH are great places for any father to start his fresh and clean new lifestyle. LUSH uses organic ingredients and makes all of their products by hand — try the “Dirty” line of products for a minty-fresh scent that will really get you going! L’Occitane is a great resource for luxurious shaving products, but they also carry products to keep Dad fresh from head to toe.  And even dads need to be pampered sometimes: give Dad the gift of relaxation by purchasing a SpaWeek or SpaFinder gift card.

Go Go Gadget

Keep your father on the cutting edge of technology by giving him a gadget gift this Father’s Day. Tech gifts are great for anyone because they can be used for work or for fun! Whether it’s a new camera, high-quality headphones or portable speakers, an e-reader, a tablet, or a trendy large monitor for his desktop, Dad will surely appreciate your awesome gift of technology. E-gift cards from retailers like Amazon.com, Hewlett-Packard, RitzCamera.com, and The Sharper Image are all available on GiftZip.com!

Regardless of the gift you give this year, make sure to let your dad know how much you appreciate him. The perfect accompaniment to a gift card from GiftZip.com is a heartfelt message of love and gratitude. From the GiftZip family to yours: Happy Father’s Day!

The History of Father’s Day

June 5th, 2013

vintage dadWould you believe that the idea of Father’s Day was introduced by a woman? It’s true! Spurred on by the success of Mother’s Day, many people felt it was only fair to create similar holidays for other family members of influence, and Father’s Day seemed most likely to catch on. While other people in the U.S. promoted the idea of Father’s Day before it was well-established, a female named Sonora Dodd is credited for the holiday as we know it today due to her enthusiasm and persistence in making it a nationwide celebration.

Sonora Smart Dodd celebrated the first Father’s Day at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910 in honor of her father and Civil War veteran, William Smart. Smart was a quiet man who was left a widower when his wife died in labor giving birth to their sixth child. Smart went on to raise his six children alone on their small farm in Washington. Grateful for all the hard work and care he showed to her and her siblings, Sonora wanted to pay tribute to her father and others like him with a special day. After hearing about Mother’s Day a year earlier, she recommended a similar holiday celebrating fathers to her pastor. She initially suggested June 5th, her dad’s birthday, but the church did not have adequate time to plan their sermons. Consequently, the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.
