The Future of Shopping: What to watch for in 2015

January 6th, 2015

Shopping Cart

Now that the holiday shopping season of 2014 is over, what shopping changes can we expect in 2015? 2014 was a transitional period for the retail industry. In the last 3 years, the mobile market has taken off.  Just in the past year, online shopping has increased by 27%. Now e-commerce composes more than 10% of all retail sales. It’s estimated to rise to 30% in 2018. That’s good for us consumers right? It’s more convenient, you don’t have to leave your home, no holiday traffic, and most of the time you end up finding better deals online that you do in the store. But is it as good as it sounds? Yes and no. Because of shipping and packaging costs, as well as higher rates of returns, some retailers end up losing money online. Costs can run as high as 25% of sales for retailers that outsource their e-commerce operations. Some companies have tried to save costs by imposing a minimum purchase amount for online orders. Others have tried to hike shipping costs. Regardless of costs, online shopping is rapidly growing and this means that retailers are trying harder than ever to perfect e-commerce to be cost efficient for all of us. With new features like Apple Pay and mobile PayPal, things will only continue to get easier in 2015. » Read more: The Future of Shopping: What to watch for in 2015

10 Tips for Smart Gift Card Shopping

January 13th, 2014

You may not have noticed in the post-holiday blur, but this year’s gift card industry experienced some major scams and setbacks. From unactivated gift cards at Target and elsewhere, to hidden fees and other scams, many shoppers may be swearing off the popular gift altogether. With a few smart shopping tips though, gift card buying can be risk-free, and you can continue to give your friends and family the freedom to choose a gift they love with gift cards to their favorite spots.

1. Watch out for hidden fees! These often pop up when buying general purpose gift cards, like those from American Express and Visa. This chart from BankRate can help to find out what fees might be lurking on gift cards, and will help you decide if you might be better off with a cash gift.

2. Save the receipt from your gift card purchase in case there was an error in its activation. Slip the receipt in with your gift, and your recipient will avoid the awkward encounter of a malfunctioning gift card at the store! This also lets them know the amount on the card without having to ask you or check online. » Read more: 10 Tips for Smart Gift Card Shopping

1. Adobe has forecast $1.6 billion in online sales on Black Friday sales alone this year.

2. Black Friday may seem crazy, but it’s nothing compared to the $2.27 billion that we’re expected to spend on Cyber Monday.

3. The same Catalog Spree that estimated 63% of people have already begun holiday shopping also noted that 30% began before Halloween. » Read more: 10 Overwhelming Holiday Shopping Statistics
