The Future of Shopping: What to watch for in 2015

Shopping Cart

Now that the holiday shopping season of 2014 is over, what shopping changes can we expect in 2015? 2014 was a transitional period for the retail industry. In the last 3 years, the mobile market has taken off.  Just in the past year, online shopping has increased by 27%. Now e-commerce composes more than 10% of all retail sales. It’s estimated to rise to 30% in 2018. That’s good for us consumers right? It’s more convenient, you don’t have to leave your home, no holiday traffic, and most of the time you end up finding better deals online that you do in the store. But is it as good as it sounds? Yes and no. Because of shipping and packaging costs, as well as higher rates of returns, some retailers end up losing money online. Costs can run as high as 25% of sales for retailers that outsource their e-commerce operations. Some companies have tried to save costs by imposing a minimum purchase amount for online orders. Others have tried to hike shipping costs. Regardless of costs, online shopping is rapidly growing and this means that retailers are trying harder than ever to perfect e-commerce to be cost efficient for all of us. With new features like Apple Pay and mobile PayPal, things will only continue to get easier in 2015. » Read more: The Future of Shopping: What to watch for in 2015

American History 101

July 1st, 2014 by GiftZip.com No comments »

United-States-with-American-FlagPeople all over the country are gearing up to celebrate that most patriotic of holidays, the Fourth of July. This glorious red-white-and-blue event usually means bonfires, barbecues, and trips to the nearest body of water. But, as is the case with many of our other patriotic holidays, we party-loving Americans tend to forget the real “reason for the season.” Why does Independence Day really exist? Let’s have a brief lesson on American history!

Independence Day in the United States, at its simplest, is a celebration of our nation’s independence from the United Kingdom. Technically, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2nd that year, but the date that is celebrated (July 4) is the one that is shown on the Declaration of Independence. John Adams had predicted at one time that July 2 would be a day of great celebration for the United States, but he was off by a few days.
